TV Connected to Amplifier but No Sound? Check the Audio Output Port First
If your TV is connected to an amplifier but there is no sound, do not start by changing speakers. First check whether the TV is actually sending audio out through the correct port.
Quick Answer
Check the TV audio output port first. If you are using HDMI ARC, the cable must be connected to the TV port marked ARC or eARC and the TV settings may need ARC or CEC enabled. If you are using optical or coaxial audio, the TV digital audio output may need to be set to PCM or another format supported by the amplifier.
Why the TV Output Port Comes First
A passive speaker problem usually happens after the amplifier. A TV-to-amplifier no-sound problem usually starts before the amplifier.
The TV must send a signal out. The amplifier must receive that signal on the correct input. If either side is set wrong, the speakers can be connected correctly and still stay silent. If you already own an amplifier but are not sure what to buy next, read whether to buy speakers or a complete karaoke set before changing hardware.
TV Output
Confirm the TV is using external audio output, HDMI ARC, optical or digital output instead of internal TV speakers.
Cable Type
HDMI ARC, optical, coaxial and analog audio use different connection paths. The port and cable must match.
Amplifier Input
The amplifier must be switched to the input that receives the TV audio signal.
HDMI ARC, Optical, Coaxial and Analog Are Different
An HDMI port is not automatically an audio output port. For TV sound going back to an audio system, the TV usually needs a port marked HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.
Optical audio normally uses a square optical digital output on the TV and a matching optical input on the amplifier or converter. Coaxial digital audio uses a different RCA-style digital connection.
Analog audio is different again. Some older TVs may have headphone output or RCA audio output, but many modern TVs do not provide analog audio output.
Check the TV Settings
- Set sound output to external speaker, audio system, HDMI ARC, optical or digital output.
- Enable HDMI ARC or eARC if that is the connection being used.
- Enable HDMI CEC if the TV requires it for ARC control.
- Try PCM or stereo output if the amplifier does not support the TV's current digital format.
- Turn up TV volume and make sure mute is off.
- Restart the TV and amplifier if HDMI ARC does not handshake correctly.
Check the Amplifier Input Source
The amplifier also needs to be on the matching input. If the TV uses optical output but the amplifier is set to Bluetooth, USB, FM, AUX or another source, there may be no sound.
Look for the input/source button, input selector or remote control. Select the input that matches the cable from the TV.
Simple Troubleshooting Table
| Symptom | First check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI cable is connected but no sound | Is it connected to the TV ARC or eARC port? | Move the cable to the ARC/eARC port and enable ARC or CEC if required. |
| Optical cable is connected but no sound | Is TV sound output set to optical or digital out? | Select external audio output and try PCM if needed. |
| Amplifier is on but silent | Is the amplifier on the correct input source? | Switch to the input used by the TV cable. |
| Speakers are connected but silent | Is the amplifier receiving a TV audio signal? | Check TV output first, then speaker wiring. |
| Sound works from Bluetooth but not TV | Is the TV using a compatible output format? | Check TV digital audio format and amplifier input. |
Do Not Connect Passive Speakers Directly to a TV
Passive speakers need amplifier power. A TV audio output is normally a signal output, not speaker power output. If you are using CCF passive karaoke speakers, connect them to a suitable amplifier speaker output, not directly to the TV. For speaker-side matching, see the power, impedance and speaker quantity checklist.
When a CCF Amplifier May Help
If your current amplifier does not have the input needed by your TV, it may be easier to choose an amplifier direction that matches your source device. Before ordering, check the actual TV output, amplifier input, speaker type and cable plan. You can also compare full setup directions in the home karaoke audio collection.

FAQ
Why is there no sound after connecting my TV to an amplifier?
The TV may not be sending audio out through the port you connected, the TV output setting may still be on TV speakers, the digital audio format may not be supported, or the amplifier may be on the wrong input source.
Does every HDMI port send TV sound to an amplifier?
No. TV sound return normally requires the HDMI port marked ARC or eARC, and the connected audio device must support the same connection direction.
Should I use optical audio or HDMI ARC?
Use the connection supported by both your TV and amplifier. HDMI ARC can be convenient when both devices support it. Optical is often used when the amplifier has optical input and the TV has digital optical output.
Why does changing the TV audio format to PCM sometimes help?
Some amplifiers or converters may not decode every digital audio format from the TV. PCM or stereo output can be a safer test format when troubleshooting no sound.
Can I connect passive speakers directly to the TV?
No. Passive speakers need a compatible amplifier. Connect the TV audio signal to the amplifier, then connect passive speakers to the amplifier speaker outputs.
What should I send CCF Audio before buying?
Send a photo of the TV audio output ports, the amplifier input panel, speaker model and the cable you plan to use. This helps confirm the setup direction before ordering.
